Seniors
The Parker Road Baptist Church Senior Division is an exciting, vibrant ministry with an average attendance of 125 on Sunday morning. According to Ken Klaus, senior adult director, the department is divided into five classes: three ladies classes, one men’s class and one co-ed class.
“The co-ed class is the largest,” Klaus says, “with about 30-40 people coming each week. This class has three teachers who switch off each month.”
Klaus says that beginning the department with a fifteen minute opening to discuss prayer requests and announcements gives the group unity.
“We have an opportunity to share concerns with each other,” he says. “We also have a lot of activities that draw us together.”
Klaus is quick to point out the extensive planning by the activity coordinators, Vivian Davis and Marge Forrest.
“They plan many activities,” he says. “They have dates set into next year.”
A regular activity for the seniors is quarterly birthday party. “Every three months,” Marge Forrest says, “we celebrate birthdays with a pot luck meal. Other special events include holiday parties, barbeques, ice cream socials and catered dinners. We look for opportunities to get together.”
Forrest reports that seniors usually pay a small amount to offset the cost of the event. “If we have any left over,” she says, “we use it to help other ministries.”
Entertainment has played a major role in many of these gatherings. “We’ve had several musical guests,” Forrest explains, “and we try to start our activities early in the evening so that it won’t be too dark when we go home.”
Klaus believes the entertainment contributes to the socials. “Since we’ve added some entertainment,” he says, “the attendance has built up at the parties.”
Forrest says the group also plans trips with other churches. “Our primary goal,” she says, “is to try to stay together and to keep people involved.”
For the new year, Davis will be the Church Training director and Forrest will work with another cochair.
